ASD Planetarium: 1999 Dieruff Academy Field Experience
FEBRUARY 11, 1999: TELESCOPE OPERATOR, VERY LARGE ARRAY
Jonathan Spargo, Safety Officer at the VLA, gave us a guided tour of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory facility. We viewed the computer systems that collect and interpret the data, as well as an antenna currently under maintenance, and the vehicle used to move the 230 ton apiece antennae from one configuration to another. The VLA is arranged in a Y-shape, and the four different configurations are not changes in shape, but changes in size. After photographing the dishes, we headed back through Albuquerque to our next destination, Star Hill Inn, in Sapello, New Mexico.
